I’m writing from Arbor Day Foundation’s Lied Lodge in Nebraska City, which is surrounded by trees. This week was their annual Member Summit, which I thoroughly enjoyed.
In my own neighborhood, when the houses were built on the hill where I live, everyone had a lush view. Trees were everywhere. Then a big white box was built just down the hill from my house.
The Big White Box
Five trees were cut down to build this box. Two of them were black walnut trees over 100 years old. Now, instead of a panoramic view of a beautiful forest, I see a big white box out my back window. No trees have been planted.
Our neighboring city, Roeland Park, Kansas, on the other hand, is an Arbor Day Foundation Tree City USA. What a contrast to visit there, as all the streets are lined with trees.
I wish Kansas City, Missouri were a Tree City USA, as well.
